Casino

"At times, the public input meeting got heated, with one man shouting out during the middle of the developer’s presentation. “Screw this casino,” yelled Robert Golka. Another Brockton man, Christopher Lovetere, was also warned by police after speaking as Bluhm gave his presentation.
During a speech by Brockton City Council President Timothy Cruise, stating that the public decided in favor of the casino, there was simultaneous clapping and booing. Brockton voters approved the casino proposal by just a 143-vote margin during a referendum vote in May last year. “Alright folks, please,” said Massachusetts Gaming Commission Chairman Stephen Crosby, shushing the crowd. “I’m speaking to both sides. Let’s keep this down.” Cruise and Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter appealed to the commission to sympathize with the economic plight of Brockton, as the city serves a disproportionate amount of homeless students, with high unemployment particularly among the immigrant population, with the community still reeling from the flight of manufacturing jobs during its recent history. Cruise said the money that would come from the casino, including $10 million in annual host community mitigation payments, would help ease the pain as the new budget of Governor Charlie Baker is going to “crucify” city schools."

It doesn't even make sense what she's saying.

Sounds like she is sending a message to the Casino people that she hasn't gotten her campaign donation yet...

I'm going to say this once.
By now you know there isn't a profanity filter on the site...
You will self police, or I will start suspending accounts.
It's not bad, but I can see some folks who enjoy more colorful language flexing their blue vocabulary. Please stop.
Thank you

And you weren't the first one.
You can be a wise guy, just clean up the language.
Thanks for your understanding.

We need something positive. We need the jobs, infrastructure improvements, more money for police and fire. Imagine this, someday, help from the Casino for a new police station! The developers are not going to spend millions to lose it, they strongly believe, the area can sustain it and make money. I can't believe the developers are still around after all the State's BS.
Wish I made the meeting, timing was crappy!

i live on the edge of brockton on the south side, and we find ways to drive around it ....i have been living in this disgusting city my entire life, and i have finally realized and come to accept- slowly, albeit- over the past 10 years that it has never taken a leap, let alone any step forward in progress economically, politically... spiritually
the so-called leaders can feed the enterprise all the propaganda they want... the politics are a s&#! show, the economics are right there with it, and the spirit of the people are suffocating in ignorance, apathy, mindlessness, stupidity, arrogance and gross ideology
can't wait to move

When I am asked where I use to live I say Brockton, sometimes there is no response and other times there is and myI follow up
is like all large cities Brockton has it's problems but the majority of it's residents are good people.
The change from city government to town government was and is amazing.
The town has many a small business that are customer friendly as well as contributors to the well being of the town,
Some seniors who need assistance with their real estate taxes, assist at the senior center or assist at the public works dept. One senior walks up and down main street picking up rubbish. For their service they receive a $500 stipend to gain some relief on on their tax payments, Kudos to them.
The friendliness of citizens to one another is an eye opener. No it is not utopia , but is a good place to live. Almost like Brockton was years ago.
Some people on this site will be pleased to know that their are still red strips in this state which is great for the people of the Commonwealth we never want to be a one party state.
Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders received the most votes in this town sort of a paradox but not really, as they are both are discussing issues that should be discussed.

Here are the things about her statement I don't understand.
1. What is that magic industry that is immune from foreseeable challenges?
2. Life is all about learning things "that we are not even accustomed to" - what rock is she hiding under?
3. Why NOT bring the casino here to EASE the current burden on all of our systems? Besides, we approved it by a majority vote. End of discussion.
4. She is right about one thing ... Brockton is not a casino TOWN. Maybe she needs a lesson on the difference between a town and a city?
5. This is the biggest pile of rubbish I have heard in a long time.
I, too, am pretty much a Brockton lifer - hoping for change, doubting that it will ever happen. With this attitude, it will only get worse.
As a side note - on her Facebook page it says her car was broken into last night while she was voting. Definitely not cool, but I am wondering in what part of Brockton this happened?
