Under the state's 2011 expanding gaming law and a compact negotiated with the tribe by the former Patrick administration, the Wampanoag Tribe would pay 17 percent of gaming revenue from a Taunton casino back to the state if it is awarded the third and final license for a resort casino. That is less than the 25 percent Mass Gaming and Entertainment would have to pay.
The Gaming Commission has the discretion to issue a license in southeastern Massachusetts to Mass Gaming but,if both the tribe and a commercial casino opened in the region, the tribe would not owe any gaming taxes to the state.

BROCKTON - A request made to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission by a developer with plans to build a casino in Brockton on Sept. 10 to disregard the possibility of a tribal casino opening up in nearby Taunton was rejected.
Billionaire developer Neil Bluhm, chairman of Chicago-based Rush Street Gaming, went before the board to request that the commission definitively say whether or not they will issue a gaming license to a community in the southeastern part of the state, known as Region C, regardless of what happens in Taunton. The commission agreed to consider Bluhm’s request and opened a two-week public comment period asking for feedback. On Thursday, the commission met in Springfield and unanimously decided to continue without altering their process.

Bangor Maine Casino revenue declines. Casino asking that property taxes and other fiscal commitments be reduced. Harbinger of what can happen in MA as gambling markets are over saturated?

I personally have blown hot and cold on this. What gave me slight concern was a new emphasis on an entertainment district they outlined surrounding the Fairgrounds on Belmont Street. But it was a topline presentation and really would need to see more details .
The Commission really didn't give any indication which way they were leaning. It ended with we'll get back to you in a few months.

"Brockton Fairgrounds owner George Carney said, casino or not, the 45-acre property will be developed, potentially as a shopping center."
At least they'll pay taxes

Capt wrote: Whatever goes in there, I wish them luck, but if the Mall is dying, what makes Carney think another mall will work?
He didn't say mall, he said shopping center. All of the ones popping up (near me) are the open air type. I think in the US for the last 10-11 years there has been only one indoor mall built.
In any event taxes plus jobs is a good thing for Brockton.

Per the Boston Globe and multiple other Sources: "State officials have cut by nearly 40 percent the amount of tax revenue they expect Plainridge Park Casino to generate, the latest sign that the state’s first casino is falling short of expectations."

"Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe’s federal status is now official. On Friday, the U.S. Dept. of the Interior posted the tribe’s reservation proclamation in the Federal Register, a key trigger to make the tribe’s reservation land eligible for a casino under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
The tribe issued a press release this morning announcing this next step in the process. The Mashpee Wampanoag has an agreement to build Project First Light casino in the City of Taunton."
