Brockton Attorney Fired For Racist Remarks
"John "Jack" Creedon appeared before the Brockton Planning Board Tuesday night to present about a historic building that is slated for demolition to make way for a new CVS store. City officials said that's when Creedon, who represented the realty company that owns the house at 12 Keith Avenue, made a shocking comment to board member Gary Keith, who is African American.
"Gary Keith said to Creedon, that's my family's house, because they share the same last name," said fellow board member Ollie Spears. "Right off the bat, Mr. Creedon goes, 'Oh you must have been their slave! The family slave'," Spears told Fox 25. "Everybody's mouth dropped like, is this guy serious?"

creedon remark
from Creedon:
“I said if you were with the Keith family back then, you would not have been a member, you would have been working there as a slave or butler,” Creedon said. “Gary laughed. ... They understood it was nothing intentionally mentioned to hurt anyone, or to make any racist remark.”
from Keith:
Keith said Wednesday that he knows Creedon personally and that the attorney didn’t mean any harm and was only making a quick off-the-cuff comment in an attempt at humor. “For me, personally, it did not offend me,” said Keith. “We live in a city that is very diverse, and there is some changes that still need to be done to bring us out of the old age mentality.”

I frankly believe racism is being kept alive by the blacks themselves.

Look he's a lawyer. He said something inappropriate. However, It was said in an official meeting of folks. As a professional he should know that everyone reacts to those type of comments differently, he shouldn't have said it. It was said in a professional setting at which the minutes are permanently recorded. He apologized. But it really left the Realty Company no choice as CVS can't be on the record showing they let the comment slide. CVS requested the Reality Co terminate his legal services. In the future maybe all the Planning Board Members and all City Officials realize they are in a Professional setting and be more cognizant of their remarks no matter how innocent they may think they are. It's a poor reflection on our City and a Bad example for how City Government should be operated. IMO.

I don't think it was derogatory at all. To me it was more "matter of fact". At least there was one Black man in that room who took it for what it was meant to be and Spears ain't him. To many thin skinned assholes in this City and to many assholes always looking for something to complain about or trying to make something out of nothing. Then you have the assholes who fall right In line with them.

and you know of spears's experience with civil rights violations?
....or do you merely ask the question because spears is black, and by default his experience is held vicariously based on the color of his skin?
it was an innocuous comment, end of story

...interesting how you state "Ollie Spears was within his personal rights to be offended"... but then later close with "But I don't speak for Ollie Spears"
LOL! ..... that's pretty good...

Yes, racism and baiting is very much alive today and it upsets me after all Martin Luther king has done. It isn’t hard to figure out those who want to keep racism alive. They won’t let it rest.

dadof2 wrote: For the record, I don't know or have never spoken to Ollie Spears. My point was who is anyone to tell anyone what they should be offended about? Just because we think it was no big deal, it obviously bothered him. Apologies were given and I'm assuming accepted.
but here's the thing, i don't believe it bothered him at all.... not in the least
frankly, it probably bothered spears more that it didn't bother keith, because it was an opportunity to jump on the proverbial bandwagon against evil white guys and keith didn't do it
