We had this conversation on the old page. Average pay in the City for Fire Fighters is approx. $99k, or 3 times the pay of the "normal" Brockton Resident. (just redid the math for 2014 total pay to 216 members of the Fire Dept., all employees and it's up to $109k)., or more than twice the median household income in the city.
That's a pretty telling stat. Saying fire fighters or FD staff ar overpaid is a tough thing to say, but making 3x those they are protecting and always asking for more, gets tough to say they ain't.
People always like to talk about the danger, and theirs no denying it's real, but there is a long line of folks just waiting for a spot on the force. All with excellent scores, so it's not as if these jobs are not in demand, and these folks are getting paid for work others aren't willing to do.
Police = $113,853 average pay for 210 persons on the payroll. That obviously includes all take home pay, but it is a substantial amount of loot. That includes folks who are making $163 bucks for the year.

Well, that's a very socialist way to look at things.
The Mayor makes four times the "normal" Brocktonian, so what?
We should be comparing a like job in a similarly sized community. What is the base pay of a Police Officer in New Bedford, Springfield, or Worcester? Or firefighter? Do you want to hire the people who will do the job for the least amount of pay?

It's about whether things are properly scaled at this point across the board, not just in comparison to other cities. They're doing it, so why shouldn't we isn't a solid approach either.
If regular citizens pay public servants, is it right to pay them so much. More philosophical that political a question?
Based on your immediate emotional response, you have confirmed what I alluded to. It's a touchy subject, and one that is met with knee jerk, emotional reactions.
Not to mention, that's an average salary for all members of the department, including those who see no action or danger.

COB has to do a better job of negotiating pay raises. No Union should go three years without a pay increase, resulting in a $Million Dollar hit to the city Budget

A Quincy police lieutenant has been placed on paid administrative leave amidst allegations he got paid for working multiple private details at the same time, a scheme known as double-dipping.
Police Chief Paul Keenan said he put Lt. Thomas Corliss on leave Wednesday after receiving reports of “discrepancies into some of the detail hours he worked.” “I informed our internal affairs department,” Keenan said. “They will look into the records. That’s going to take a little bit of time.”
Last year, Corliss was the city’s highest-earning employee, including overtime and private-detail pay. Corliss earned $234,900in 2014 – $147,478 in base salary and $86,912 in overtime and private details.

This statement is one of the biggest problems with unions. Across the board pay raises based on length of service instead of individual lay raises based on merit and performance.no person or group should ever have automatic raises based on time served. If you're not improving and cost of living isn't increasing, why are you getting a raise. This is the socialist thinking, not what I said earlier. It doesn't reward effort or ability, but it is extortion of money for a whole group who may or may not deserve it on threat of potential strike or united drop in service.dadof2 wrote: . This is how unions suck an area or business dry for their own betterment, while essentially screwing the working man they claim to represent.
This isn't a direct shot at our fd or pd, but about the thought on automatic raises based on a period of time and for a whole group whether they all deserve it or not.

The best system would also limit the amount of time a contract could remain expired before being turned over to a third party arbitrator for a prompt and binding solution.

I have no idea how I'm going to be able to swing it anymore. I refinanced a few years ago to bring my payment down too. Not working!
