Hope the link works. "Annual Reports of the Brockton City Government for the Year 1914".
Go ahead. Find and share your treasure...
One of my favorites:
"From the Highway Department Report, commenting on their success in paving Crescent and Center Streets with Macadam at a cost of $2 per Square Yard:
'To improve our streets in order to adapt them to all kinds of traffic is a perplexing question. Automobilists and in fact about everybody wants a smooth road, but all are inclined to lose sight of the fact that smooth roads are more or less slippery and horses are apt to slip on such streets unless care is exercised in driving.'"

John Burbank for Mayor! This reflects a time when people took seriously the management of our city. Imagine $7,000 of the city's debt is allotted to "comfort station" - how ironic. I like the "Distribution of each Dollar Spent that was Raised by Taxes" with the pie chart. I will sift through this. At a glance, it appears that it should be required reading for anyone who thinks they are qualified to run for office. Thank you for posting this. As a history buff, I find it fascinating.
