Are you kidding me. She showed an ID and was allowed to walk to the classroom on her own? Why aren't all visitors escorted? There are school police on site at BHS, why couldn't they be called to escort? The mom didn't have an appointment. Lucky she wasn't carrying a weapon because who would know. I'm not even going to comment on the mothers action because they're despicable. Get it together BPS. It's one incident after another There should be a clear, concise security plan in place. And it most definitely shouldn't allow visitors to roam the buildings alone. Kids can't go two feet without an ID, lets protect our kids a little better.

m.enterprisenews.com/news/20160406/mothe...inside-brockton-high

" A mother of a student at Brockton High School lied to get into the school Wednesday and confronted a teacher while she was teaching a class, leading to her arrest, officials said. The parent walked into the main entrance of the high school about 1:30 p.m. and signed-in, saying she was going to speak with Green Housemaster Andrew Donovan, Brockton Public Schools spokeswoman Michele Bolton told The Enterprise.

Instead, the woman went to a classroom full of students and confronted a female teacher because she thought her child was being treated unfairly, officials said."

The arrested mom is pleading her case in the comments section of the Enterprise. if I got arrested the last thing I'd be doing is commenting in the newspaper. But hey, priorities.

Minichello's comment "Brockton School Committee Vice Chair Thomas Minichiello, Jr., said that it’s a shame that the stupidity of this one person may lead to additional security measures being put in place at the front desk, especially when the district’s resources are already being spread thin by a budget crunch."

You have School Police and Floor teachers who get paid to walk the halls. Have them be available to walk visitors. You have Asst HM who can't even bother to cover lunch or sub for a teacher. What a freeking mess this HS Has become.,

Yep, I see a request for an increase in the budget to hire an assistant to the instants Mother Escorter. This is why a Charter is better.

But the wannabe Mayor said the kid is Class President and gets good grades so there has to be another side. Lke that qualifies for the teacher to be wrong because it's posted on Social Media. Get off the Internet, stop posting in the Enterprise comments and be a good example for your kid. There's obvious an issue with the teacher and mom. Resolve the issues Iike adults. No matter what the story, the mom did something that caused her to be arrested. And IMO in the process reveled a security issue that needs to be addressed.

While the article focuses on the mother's actions, I'm more interested in what the admin did when the parent stormed off. Were the school cops called? Did he/she have someone follow the parent? If not, why not? That person was the first line of defense. Do the teachers/officers in the hall carry a walkie talkie that's connected to the front desk? A simple BOLO would have put everyone on alert.

The mother should have never made it to the classroom.

You can't fix stupid.

Only a matter of time.

If it weren't for the charter school, Brockton schools would have more money to hire a Director of security, a deputy director of security, a supervisor of security, an assistant supervisor of security, an administrative assistant to the security department and finally a janitor who can escort visitors when he's not sweeping or directing traffic.

You can't fix stupid.

An escort should be provided to parents etc once they are in the building.

One could accomplish this using our JROTC as they help with a multitude of functions, open houses etc. This would provide an additional layer without cost

One thing we spoke about doing and were in the process of bidding out was to put the vestibule further out towards the doors so there would be no access till signed in and approved. I would also like some mechanism to double check someone with a criminal record. The Plymouth county Sheriff has new tech being used by officers to scan a fingerprint which will pop up data much faster. While not immediate it can be used to tag this person for anything in the future.

These are low cost items

it's pretty bad when you have to run a high school like a prison, and parents will soon have to be treated like someone visiting the incarcerated at plymouth .... lol

.... all because of one mother's idiocy, and a school's knee-jerk reaction

sigh

Security is like this at all schools. They are like prisons because people are crazy. It's she said she said because as usual the Super isn't answering requests for comments so we have one side which is being played out all over the Enterprise, Enterprise Comments, FB and in the school Community. The mom is in court today blaming everyone else for her actions, the "Class President" is "whining" (my opinion) to the Enterprise while not in school because she was traumatized by the teacher talking about her and apparently not traumatized by her mother.

The school doesn't get a pass on this. The Super again goes underground. She should be addressing this and maybe she will after the Court appearance? What did the school do correctly, what could they do better? Reassure parents and staff that security is paramount. I saw a couple of solutions that Ray H. Proposed that doesn't cost anything.

giving anyone unfettered access to a school is a recipe for disaster.

there is some measure of security at most schools, yes.... a buzzer, signing in, etc

....but to now suggest using tools the police use by running CORIs, scanning fingers, etc, just because one moron of a mother managed to get pass some protocol is silly

you mean to tell me that school admin actually thought the plan they had in place was foolproof?.... give me a break.... lol

troubling the level of fear we live in

and btw, she didn't have unfettered access... she managed to wily her away around things and now the school has to answer for it

sucks being held accountable.... but yeah, let's start scanning fingers and running CORIs and putting up medal detectors and doing pat downs and removing shoes

that's the ticket!

I am 100% against using metal detectors

We already process cori as this is the law for anyone who is in contact with children
That's state requirement.

Escorts provide low cost option to help add additional layer
We already employ a system that scan your ID and will reject it if there is an issue.
What we don't have is and this could be used to identify those who have any record in the system the fingerprint tech. This would allow one to identify those that could have a security issue and then an officer already there could escort the person in the building

As for fingerprinting every teacher is by law to be fingerprinted and every staff member.

We live in a world or crazies and if we employ 21st cent tech at low cost we can provide additional protection to our students and staff.

I would also like to see a feed from our CCTV etc into the Brockton PD and into cruisers so at any time one can see into the school
Its already employed at NJ schools and has worked well. Just an added tool to assist our officers and staff in a potential situation.

I know about CORIs as they relate to teachers, staff, volunteers, chaperones, etc.... i got no problem with that

but you start running CORIs on parents wanting to visit with teachers over an issue said parent might have, then brockton high will be turning virtually everyone away.... and if you think you have problems now?... sit back and watch the craziness unfold

...and yeah, a feed into the brockton police station.... that's a good one, I forgot that one

anything else?....how about barbed wire and a gate at the entrances?

listen, i get the climate we live in..... but listen to yourself!.... one lady gets emotional and acts like an idiot- and mind you, it probably could have been prevented had someone at that front desk been a little more vigilant- and you propose ideas straight out of fort apache the bronx!... lol

Some good points by all but here we are again. Reactive instead of being proactive. And I'd like to say the following is my opinion only: I am not sure we have the right person in charge at the HS. Well educated but again reactive. And I am not overly impressed with the Super either.

this isn't about this incident. For me I have raised security issues some time ago so we don't have to deal with issues like this. I want security to be a multi layered approach that for minimal cost can make a safer environment for teachers staff and children

Hell Newtown just had an incident with a teacher bringing a firearm to school. Common sense clearly is missing and sometimes we need to go a little above to make sure kids are safe but last thing I want is a prison but having a better idea of who is in your building would provide a way to have additional measures

I want to employ 21st century tech that helps our officers, our teachers, our staff so god forbid something does happen

i don't buy the whole '21st century technology' nonsense as it relates to keeping people safe, because it's rooted in fear and comes with sacrificing freedoms we'll never get back ...that's a BS argument Orwellian in nature
