I know this has noting to do with lettuce, but it does have to do with governmental inspections of food. Years ago ALL meat was inspected. I remember my mother wouldn't buy any meat unless it had an official ink stamped with a government approval on it. These guys literally went to all butcher shops and actually hand stamped it after they inspected EACH piece/slab. Good old days!
I don't believe ANYTHING edible is inspected anymore. We might have an occasional walk through, but that's about it.
Our food supply should be inspected more now than ever because of the source. Hardly anything comes from our own country anymore unless you go to a local farm and try to find one. The government put us all out of business. Remember?
Anyhow, coming from foreign countries, anything can be expected. We have no clue how they operate and I think we're better off not knowing. We'd starve to death if we did know.

The USDA that you see on meat is only a classification of the cut of meat. It has nothing to do with health inspections and you won't see any markings pertaining to HI's unless you are on the premises and veiw the certificate which should be up to date.
and from working at Fernandes Supermarkets (yeah I know I'm old) I can tell you that the hamburger was always made from whatever they threw in the grinder.
