This guy just freaks me out, I hope you don't depend on him to protect your kids in school!!
Letter to the Editor - Boston Globe - 28 Dec 2009
I am a math teacher at Brockton High School, the site of a school shooting earlier this month.
Current school security procedures lock down school populations in the event of armed assault. Some advocate abandoning this practice as it holds everyone in place, allowing a shooter easily to find victims.
An alternative to lockdown is immediate exodus via announcement. Although this removes potential hostages and makes it nearly impossible for the shooter to acquire preselected targets, it unfairly rewards resourceful children who move to safety off-site more shrewdly and efficiently than others.
Schools should level playing fields, not intrinsically reward those more resourceful. A level barrel is fair to all fish.
Some propose overturning laws that made schools gun-free zones even for teachers who may be licensed to securely carry concealed firearms elsewhere. They argue that barring licensed-carry only ensures a defenseless, target-rich environment.
But as a progressive, I would sooner lay my child to rest than succumb to the belief that the use of a gun for self-defense is somehow not in itself a gun crime.
Several teachers around the country and here in MA have tried to win the OK to carry in the classroom. As far as I know, they've all failed.
Mass evacuation of a school in a live shooter incident could also provide an ambush situation for someone waiting outside for the evacuation.
I don't believe teachers should carry in class, but I also believe our School Police officers should participate in live shooter training, on an ongoing basis. ESPECIALLY since the High School is so large.
This post has gone national, thousands of reactions on numerous political forums! Some opine that this guy is a clever satirist. I think he is just a total nut job!
This line indicates to me, he is poking fun of liberals: "Schools should level playing fields, not intrinsically reward those more resourceful. A level barrel is fair to all fish." This is the liberal agenda, level all playing fields; force "equality" by punishing some to accomodate others, less resourceful. Classic!! Unfortunately, the teacher will suffer for his free speech comments, but it is the thinking of way too many around here, especially in the school system.

I had him as a teacher at BHS. He's a nut job... He would assign us to seats and give us a card from a deck of 52. That would be our assigned card for when he asked questions; he'd draw a card. I was the four of spades. haha
I think Scott is right. Written on the teacher's black board a few months ago... "Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see?" "I see a liberal looking at me."

wow! he's crazy! let's lock him up for keeping his students alert in class.
I never understood the lockdown if someone is in the building blowing people's brains out.
Are you kidding, Dennis? What about these sentences:
"An alternative to lockdown is immediate exodus via announcement. Although this removes potential hostages and makes it nearly impossible for the shooter to acquire preselected targets, it unfairly rewards resourceful children who move to safety off-site more shrewdly and efficiently than others.

It seems to me that he has written this to show the lefties how ridiculous their ideology is. This teacher is not crazy, he's brilliant.

...i'll admit, the last sentence was kind of a curve ball
but then it dawned on me... he's realizing just how profound an
impact his actions would have if he ever found himself in a position
where he has to use a firearm in the presence of children
he knowsw EXACTLY what would happen and would concede to
condemnation by everyone

I'm talking about the lockdown in general, not his opinion of who benefits. Crazy gunman in school = lock doors so nobody can get out. That's a good idea why?
